On Cliff Jumping

Last Summer I went Coasteering (another word for Cliff Jumping) for the first time. It was scary, exciting and I had no idea what I was doing.

As we were climbing a small cliff and getting ready for our first jump, Cláudio, our coach, went over the safety brief again:

Rest easy, this is safe. Remember, you have to control your jump, don’t let the jump control you.

Ok… That makes sense. But then he said something else:

The most important thing is: Don’t think. Just jump.

Wait… what? But don’t we have to open the arms and then close them when… so many things!

I was a bit confused but I trusted him, so I jumped…

…. and it was amazing.

After diving into the ocean, swimming to the next rock and climbing it, I jumped again.

Each new rock was higher than the last one. Not all jumps were great, sometimes I didn’t control the jump correctly – but it was OK. I was fine. Still scared, but fine.

When I got home I was all sore but so happy.

…and then it hit me.

Doesn’t the exact same principle apply to personal projects?

What’s stopping you from starting your next project? What’s between you and the water? What are you afraid of?

We can learn to manage our energy so we make the best out of our time. We can embrace failure and let it guide us to the right answer. We can jump.

You’ll never know what you can do if you don’t jump.

And if the jump doesn’t go well, climb another cliff and do it again.

We’re jumping into water, not throwing ourselves out of a plane. We’ll be fine.

You can do it. I believe in you. Now go make some art.

! Thank you so much for mentioning that day and me.
    Just do it! Don’t think!
THAT’S IT! THE WORST THING is giving attention to your fears. You can take precautions but just do it. Take the risk!
Appreciate the failure and enjoy the up hill. Because it’s greater once you get up “there” and humbling.
