Are You Challenging Yourself Or Playing It Safe?

I practiced horse jumping when I was a kid.

One day I told my instructor how bad I felt because I kept on falling off my horse despite years of practice.

…and their answer marked me forever.

It’s not as much about how long you’ve been practicing, as it is about how many times you fell and got back up again.

I learned to welcome failure into my life on that day. I never felt so proud for falling over 100 times. In fact, I was now eager to jump higher!

On that day I realized that you don’t become the best rider by only treading carefully, avoiding the hard jumps or the challenging paths. You don’t become the best by refusing to ride that one scary mare or to try new things.

You become the best by embracing failure and then seeking some more.

How else are you supposed to get better if you don’t challenge yourself?

Are you ready to get back on the horse?

Meet 9-year-old me right before a jumping competition with Shaka.

<3 <3 I might be totally biased, but this is my favorite post of yours to date. I'm jealous. I've only fallen off like ten times. I can't even fathom over 100 times. I think you rode more than me XD

I also preferred dressage to jumping. Weird, I know. I was so afraid of falling off. Still am.

YOU'RE SO CUTE and I love you and the horse is gorgeous.

Also, your walking disaster self is an inspiration to me. <3

      Daaaaw! Thank you, Britny!
As I was drafting this post, you kept coming to mind. So glad you like it!
Dressage is lovely! I really enjoyed looking at it but thought it was too complicated… #adrenalinejunkie

Something that came to mind: many of the falls I had were because I was afraid to jump right before I jumped. The horse felt it and I ended up eating dirt. Isn’t that interesting?

Thank you so much for posting. And I’m delighted that you enjoy the picture 🙂 Shaka was a very sweet horse too. You’d love him!

Oh my, it’s a tiny Ânia on a horse!! <3
Ha! I should be proud of myself now for almost breaking my foot at ballet. (It’s twisted badly so I can hardly walk now) I’m not a very good dancer but I actually can’t wait to get back to it in January. We were just getting to the good stuff!
Unfortunately I have to stop in February, but I loved trying something new again.
This is a timely blogpost as I’m really struggling to learn to build a creative business. Keeping up making comics combined with work and everything else….I sometimes let a plate fall during this juggling act. But by seeing what doesn’t work I’m learning so much about doing this, and about myself. 🙂
Keep up the great work Ânia!

Hi, Henrike! 😀 Thanks so much!
Really glad you’re pushing yourself with your comic, despite work and all the life things <3 The feeling of accomplishment that comes with is is just the best, isn't it?
Hope you get well soon! Careful with your foot 🙂 <3

Yes, I agree. Finishing things or learning new skills is the best. 🙂

What an influencer you’ve become by simply stepping out there and sharing not only what you’ve learned and tested, but sharing what you are learning. I you and others who invite people to step forward do it by being willing to take risks….and somehow falling becomes beautiful. Wow….it’s a mystery but it sure gives me hope and encouragement. Appreciatecha!…that’s just made up word that mean’s I love what you do…keep it up! 🙂
